Dysport was released in July 2009 by the FDA as an equal alternative to Botox. For all practical purposes both disport and Botox are the same molecule and both have equivalent actions. Dysport has been safely used in Europe since 1991 and has been used for cosmetic, ophthalmic, and neurologic disorders. Early results in the United States appear to confirm company literature that the onset of action of Dysport is usually within 2 days and it may spread farther than Botox. Medicis also claims Dysport lasts longer than Botox, but that has not been substantiated in the United States. Patients in our clinic have expressed satisfaction with Dysport and a wish to continue its use. Retreatment is indicated every 4-6 months, though individual experiences may differ.
