Photodynamic Therapy was developed in England for treatment of certain kinds of skin cancer. These patients were noted to have younger looking smoother skin and physicians realized this is an excellent treatment for skin rejuvenation. Because it reduces the size of oil glands and superficial blood vessels it is an excellent treatment for acne and for rosacea. Because it reduces inflammation it is an excellent treatment for raised scars. Because it treats red and brown pigment as well as sun damage it is an excellent treatment for sun damage and superficial wrinkles.

PDT is performed by applying a chemical called aminolevulenic acid to the skin regions that are to be treated, usually face and neck. Patients may then leave the office for 1-3 hours. Upon their return they are treated with IPL, which activates the chemical and produces the desired skin rejuvenation. Treatments are relatively painless and patients can return to work the next day. There is a slight chance of sunburn with this treatment so attention must be paid to the experience of the cosmetic surgery center which provides the service. MetropolitanMD is unique in having more than 10 years of experience in performing PDT.

Since patients are photosensitive for 3 days following the procedure, they may not have any sun exposure to the treated areas when outdoors. This means no outdoor activities for 3 days and wearing protective clothing and hats when traveling to and from their home.
