Psoriasis is a disease with many faces and many problems. It can affect any part of the body, produces disfiguring plaques on the skin and may cause significant flaking. It can have a variety of symptoms including pain, itching, bleeding, and weeping. It can be associated with other diseases most notably arthritis. It is difficult to treat and can be difficult to live with.

Psoriasis is caused by a disordered multiplication of cells which apparently results from altered communication between the dermis and the epidermis. It has many biologic and immunologic features which are not specific enough to allow us to attack and cure the disease.

Fortunately, most patients with psoriasis can be treated with topical medications and most of the rest with anti-metabolites (drugs which interfere with cell multiplication) and with biologics (drugs which manipulate the way our own immune system monitors and controls our biologic and physiologic functions). Time tested compounds used in the clinics in Israel including salts, mud, and coal tar have beneficial effects on psoriasis patients as do some steroid topical preparations. Similarly, control of inflammation can lead to significant reductions in symptoms.

The treatment of psoriasis utilizes the art and the science of medicine.
