What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedure with a proven track record over many years. Men and women alike have been amazed by this surgery’s capability to remove stubborn fat where exercise, diet, and other attempts have been unsuccessful. Liposuction works by surgically eliminating excess fat from many parts of the body, using a device that suctions fat from underneath the skin. Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. John D. Rachel, is a specialist in fat removal and body contouring and performs many methods of reducing fat and shaping the body. Each unique body is different, and a patient consultation with Dr. Rachel will help gain clarity on the best possible approach to meet your aesthetic goals. Liposuction is commonly used on the neck, hips, thighs, abdomen, flanks, inner knees, arms, and beneath the skin. The results from liposuction typically remain for many years if the patient adheres to a healthy lifestyle.

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Surgical liposuction is reserved for patients who are near or at their ideal weight. It is not a solution for weight loss and should not be considered as a weight loss method. Good candidates for liposuction are men or women who demonstrate:

  • A healthy skin tone with minimal to no excess or sagging skin
  • A reasonable and stable weight
  • Localized excess fatty deposits that diet and exercise cannot improve

Liposuction Consultation

Dr. Rachel will check your general health and go over your medical history during your liposuction consultation. A physical examination will be performed to confirm if you are suitable for the procedure. The course of treatment, as well as potential outcomes and any potential issues, will be explained during the appointment.

Dr. Rachel will ask about your surgical goals, medical concerns, previous operations, and current prescription drugs, including supplements and vitamins. During the session, you should discuss your alcohol and tobacco habits in detail.

The Liposuction Procedure

Either general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and intravenous sedation will be administered to you to keep you comfortable during the liposuction surgery. Dr. Rachel will advise you on the best anesthesia option during the consultation.

A narrow tube called a cannula is then introduced through an incision in the skin to perform liposuction. The cannula is used to release the fat cells from the surrounding tissues and to improve the contours of the area being treated. The fat is then suctioned out of the body using a suction device attached to the cannula.

Once the desired contours are obtained following liposuction, Dr. Rachel will dress the incisions appropriately.

Liposuction Recovery

After the liposuction procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area. Compression garments or elastic bandages may be used to help reduce these symptoms while the area heals. Patients can return to work and other regular activities as soon as they feel comfortable, which is usually after a few days. Exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks.

Dr. Rachel will give you special instructions on how to care for your treated area and reduce any complications after the procedure. The results of the procedure may not be visible until any swelling and bruising subsides. This may take several months, and results will appear gradually throughout this time.

The Cost of Liposuction

Each liposuction performed by Dr. Rachel is customized based on the specific areas of the body the patient wants to address and their desired results. During your consultation, Dr. Rachel will go over the details of your procedure and let you know what the expected cost of your liposuction in Chicago will be. Financing options are available.

Your Liposuction will be performed in Dr. John D. Rachel's surgery center located in North Shore.

Recently had liposuction to remove my saddlebags. Day 1 and they were gone! I mean poof gone!!!! I look fabulous already and I can’t wait for 4 weeks until I can wear skirts and dresses again. I’m finally in skinny jeans without being embarrassed! His staff is amazing and he is so gentle and calming. Liposuction is not for the weak or faint hearted but it was well worth it. Dr Rachel answered all my questions and made everything a little more bearable. Definitely recommend.

Liposuction Surgery FAQ

  • When will I see my results?
The final results become apparent over a period of about three months. Patients will have a more slender and sculpted body. The fat cells removed are permanently eliminated, and liposuction patients commonly enjoy long-lasting if a patient remains dedicated to a healthy and active lifestyle. Extreme weight fluctuations can compromise or even reverse the effects of liposuction. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise habits is essential to combat the growth of fat cells still present within the body.
  • When can I exercise?
Although it is essential to move the body after surgery to prevent blood clot development and possible cramping, your return to exercise should be gradual and progressive. You will most likely be able to resume your regular exercise routine in about two to three weeks, depending on the extensiveness of the treatment. It is recommended that you slowly ease your body into more strenuous activities, such as weightlifting, to prevent unnecessary strain on the body.
  • Will I have scarring after liposuction?
The incisions used for liposuction are generally very small. Patients who undergo liposuction may experience minor scarring and darkening of the incision sites. Attempts are made to place surgical incisions in discreet areas of the body so that they may be easily concealed with clothing and bathing suits. Additionally, scars are likely to fade over time.
  • What type of anesthesia is used during liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed using IV sedation or local anesthesia. Dr. Rachel will discuss these options with you during your consultation.
  • Is liposuction safe after a C-section?
It is entirely safe to have liposuction after a C-section. However, an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) may be more appropriate if patients are looking to treat loose skin or muscle in the abdominal area. Scarring may also be an issue for some patients who have had a C-section. It is important to discuss the right liposuction option with Dr. Rachel to accommodate your previous C-section scars.
  • How much weight can I lose with liposuction?
It is common for misinformed patients to assume that liposuction can be used as a weight-loss method, but this is not true. Liposuction reduces the amount of fat in the body to produce a leaner, sleeker, and slimmer physique. Improving the body’s shape can significantly improve a patient’s self-image, confidence, and overall quality of life.
