What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is an anti-aging treatment that improves uneven skin tones and gives skin a more rejuvenated, youthful appearance. Although the basic idea behind chemical peels is exfoliation, different types of peels can be used to achieve vastly different outcomes. Therefore, it’s important to discuss your skincare goals with your provider so that we can help you select the best treatment for your situation.

Chemical Peel Treatments Offered at MetropolitanMD
Glycolic Acid Peel – A Superficial Peel
This light peel, composed of alpha-hydroxy acids, was a staple in Cleopatra’s skin armamentarium. While it is partially neutralized and weaker in salons, it is safely used at 70% at MetropolitanMD for a quick healing and comfortable peel. Whether used for acne, brown spots, or just to refresh the skin, this peel is the gold standard for all light peels. Most patients may return to work immediately with slight or no redness.
BETA Peel – A Superficial Peel
The beta-hydroxy peel utilizes salicylic acid, known for its ability to safely increase the turnover of the skin. In addition, it rarely affects skin color so it is safe for Caucasian, Asian, and African-American skin. It is often used in patients with skin of color who have acne, dark spots, post inflammatory pigmentation, and rough surface areas. Most patients return to work immediately with slight or no redness.
Blue Peel Radiance from Obagi – A Superficial Peel
The Blue Peel Radiance is a salicylic acid-based solution combined with trace amounts of other hydroxyl acids and skin protectors to produce an immediate tightening of skin with the same benefits of improved texture and skin tones available from other salicylic acid peels. This peel works very well with home care systems for acne, skin repair, and skin maintenance.
TCA Peels – Superficial to Medium Depth Peel
Trichloroacetic acid peels have been used for the past century to produce peels varying from superficial to medium depth. The advantages of these peels are that the concentration of the acid as well and the preparation of the skin can be varied to produce different depths of peels. With more flexibility, these peels are ideal for patients with mild to moderately sun damaged skin, discolored skin, wrinkled skin, as well as impaired skin tones and texture. Patients experience redness for up to 5 days and may peel for 2-5 days depending on the depth of the peel. Patients may choose to avoid social contact for several days.
Blue Peel from OBAGI – Superficial to Medium Depth Peel
This is another form of a TCA peel in which the peel solution is embedded in a paste-like mixture, In some patients this may create a more even distribution of the peel and as it can be applied in layers the depth of the peel can be controlled as well as patient discomfort.
I am extremely picky about doctors, and he seemed top notch! I noticed right away that he is all about his patients and not his ego, and very present/not hurried in the room. He seemed gentle, caring, and competent! He helped my daughter’s skin problems go away. No wait to get in, either!

Chemical peels can cause some discomfort during the procedure, often described as a stinging or burning sensation, depending on their strength.
