What is Restylane?

Restylane logoFor patients seeking a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation wrinkle treatment, Restylane is a popular choice among our Chicago area patients. This injectable filler is used to smoothen out wrinkles and creases on the face and can be used in the lips to produce a fuller, plumper effect. Composed of hyaluronic acid, Restylane products are safe and effective to use on the face, and the results are seen immediately once injected. Because this product does not spread from the injection site, it is perfect for distinct and precise lines. It is used to fill in laugh lines, enhance the lips, and add definition and volume to the cheeks.

What to Expect During Your Restylane Treatment

During your appointment, the areas of the injection sites will be marked and thoroughly cleaned prior to the treatment. With the comfort of local anesthesia, the Restylane filler will be injected into the skin using a fine needle or canula where added volume is desired. Most patients can return to work with no downtime after their Restylane procedure. The results following a Restylane injection can be seen quickly and can last up to a full year. Patients are generally thrilled with the fast-acting, visible results that the injections provide.

Alternative Fillers

While Restylane products offer great benefits for patients seeking skin rejuvenation, there are other injectable fillers that may be considered as well. Some of these are comprised of materials such as collagen, polylactic acid, and calcium hydroxyapatite. During your consultation, we will discuss the various fillers that are available today and work with you to understand your aesthetic goals so that the best filler choice can be made.

Expected Cost of Restylane

The overall cost will be determined based upon which products are used, how large an area is being treated, and the extent of wrinkles and lines being addressed.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Restylane offers a subtle, natural approach to enhancing your appearance. Treatments can be used to smooth facial folds and lines, create fuller lips, and shape facial contours, especially the cheeks and chin.

The Most Common Areas Treated Are:

  • From the nose to the angle of the mouth (the nasolabial folds)
  • Lips (enhancement)
  • Cheeks and chin (shaping)
  • Back of the hands, décolletage, face (skin rejuvenation)

As with any medical or surgical procedure, there are risks involved with a Restylane injection. Please review the Restylane website for additional information.

Restylane FAQ

  • Does Restylane Hurt?

Although the needle used for these injections is very fine, some people may experience mild discomfort, a local anesthetic cream or a mixture of Laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) may be used.

  • Can Restylane be Used If I’ve Had a Laser Treatment or Chemical Peel?

If you have recently had another cosmetic treatment, we recommend you wait until the area has completely healed and your skin is back to its normal condition.

  • Is There Any Downtime with Restylane?

Immediately following your treatment, you can expect some slight redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching and/or bruising – just as you might expect with any type of injection. However, the discomfort is temporary and generally disappears after a few days. With lip enhancement, it is wise to choose your treatment time with care since your lips may become swollen and appear slightly uneven for a few days.

  • Are There Any Risks with Restylane?

Since this dermal filler was introduced in 1996, it has been used in more than 6 million treatments worldwide. There are a few common injection-site reactions that might occur after a Restylane treatment, but they usually go away within a day or two. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. Rarely, inflammation may last for up to two weeks. After a lip enhancement, your lips may be swollen for several days.

  • Are There Any Side Effects with Restylane?

Most people can benefit from Restylane treatment, but it has not been tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women. Restylane should not be used in or near areas where you have or have had inflammation, active skin disease, or related conditions. It should not be injected into an area where you have a permanent implant.

As with any medical or surgical procedure, there are risks involved with a Restylane injection. Please review the Restylane website for additional information.
